Looking to build a path toward software development or web development? Here are some steps to consider:- General Education provides solid support in the workplace teaching you skills like communication, teamwork and a broad knowledge of the past.
- Science is helpful but not necessary and basic Math skills are important. You will find a high correlation between math skills and computer programming skills. Both are logical and technical problem solving.
- If you are looking to become a computer programmer, you
should study the following areas: basic computer skills, a
software language like Visual Basic, Java or C#. You should
take the SQL database class because each programming course will
need to eventually store data.
You will not find a lot of difference between C# and Java. The biggest difference is the between the set of tools used to develop applications. While NetBeans (Java) has improved greatly over the past few years, Microsoft’s Visual Studio (C#) is a hands-down better IDE for the development of C# programs.
However, I still see Java widely used; primarily, for Web applications. If I were choosing one language for any project, it would be C#. You can develop desktop, web, smart device and other types of applications in half the time. - If you are looking to become a Web developer, you should
study the following areas: basic computer skills, HTML and
JavaScript. You should have design skills like Photoshop and
Flash. For more advanced skills, you should study a server-side
scripting language like PHP or ASP.NET. The
difference between PHP and ASP.NET is ASP.NET is from Microsoft
which has a wealth of free or low cost development tools.
PHP is a widely used development language. You will see
many web pages with the extension .php. Which is better?
You will need to determine that on your own.
- You should study
databases to include an SQL course. Additionally, it would be
helpful to have experience with a programming language like Java or
C# before, after or while you take the SQL Database course.
Programming and databases go hand-in-hand. It will be a great benefit to learn how to program and then how to add a database to your applications. You will find that at least two of our classes work directly with computer programming and databases.
IN118 PHP and MySQL databases.
IN181 Computer Programming and Databases (Using Visual Basic)
You can program an application using just SQL but you will have much more flexibility and a more robust application using one of the programming languages.
