Zipping Files

The purpose of a zip file is to take a number of folders and files and compress them together into one zip file. When you upload these files into WebCT, you only have to upload one zip file instead of many separate files. To upload unzipped files one by one into WebCT, can be done, but it is extremely time consuming.

In Windows XP, right clicking on a file or folder that you wish to zip can be done in any directory menu window that will give you access.  When the dropdown menu opens, click on Send To then choose Compressed (zipped) Folder.  The compression program will automatically send the newly zipped folder/file to the bottom of the directory page that you are in.  Check to be sure it's there, and that you know it's name.  You may rename this file/folder if you wish by right clicking on it and choosing Rename from the dropdown menu.

To upload, locate your .zip file and upload it: as an attachment to e-mails; as a Dropbox assignment; or, to Edit Files in the Student Web Pages.

If you are uploading to the Student Web Pages, you will need to unzip the file.  You must have all of the folders and files, including your index.htm file, directly under your Name folder for your web page to display properly.

If you have an earlier version of Windows and do not already have, or do not know how to use a compression program, please e-mail me and I will provide you a walk through for downloading and using WinZip.
